A top-secret research base in Nevada faces catastrophe when the deadly Crimson Virus is stolen. Dr. Reynolds must uncover the truth before it's too late.
Dr. Marcus Reynolds couldn’t help but feel the pressure of the situation bearing down on him. The facility was in pandemonium, with every resource they had dedicated toward tracking the missing Crimson Virus. The virus, after all, was a biological weapon designed to potentially kill millions if it fell into the wrong hands. And time was running out.
They were working around the clock, but they had no leads. The thief had been very careful, even methodical, and left no trail. With every technological advantage they had, the virus just vanished.
As Reynolds checked the new surveillance tapes, the question in his head never varied: Who was that smart enough to orchestrate an operation of such finesse? It wasn’t just an impulsive move from desperation. There was some strategic planning that led to military-level precision in stealing it.
“Hey, Reynolds,” said Lieutenant Olivia Hayes. “I’ve been studying Mercer’s work for days, and I have discovered something.”
Reynolds turned, frowning. “What did you uncover?”
Mercer had worked on a black project for three months, separate from everyone. We had suspected it was work as usual. But the deeper I dug into it, the more it started to seem as if he’d been constructing something—something that went beyond just the virus itself.
Reynolds’s heart skipped a beat. “What kind of project?
Hayes handed him a data tablet. Reynolds scrolled rapidly through the info. An advanced delivery system meant the Crimson Virus could be distributed far faster, and far more efficiently than he’d thought even possible. Aerosolized delivery, too-an airborne one from the skies above, a watery one from rivers and reservoirs, both meant containment would almost be impossible.
Reynolds felt a chill run down his spine. If Mercer had perfected this new delivery system, then the virus could be released anywhere in the world, in any city, and there would be no way to stop it.
“How soon could he deploy this?” Reynolds asked, his voice tight with anxiety.
“I don’t know,” Hayes admitted, “but we’re going to find out.”
Reynolds shifted away, thinking aloud. The mountain before them was great. They had not the vaguest idea where Mercer was to be found or whether he had already implemented his plan. All they knew for certain was that the virus existed-and if it weren’t stopped quickly, nothing could prevent this world from experiencing an unparalleled catastrophe.
Colonel Fletcher swept into the room, a grim look on his face. “We have a lead.
Reynolds looked at him, his brow furrowing. “Where?”
Fletcher unfolded the map of the general area, pinpointing several locations with red Xs. “The virus has been stolen, apparently by some mercenaries, led by an exsoldier who deals in black markets and arms running. He has shown up in all these places and areas over the last 24 hours. This person is reportedly hired by one of the other people to a place unknown with the virus, as far as we can reckon.
Fletcher’s words provoked a surge of anger in him. “What is our strategy?”
“I will track them down. A team is headed out to cut them off ahead of time before they get beyond our reach, Fletcher said forcefully. “And Reynolds, he added, You can’t be fully prepared for what’s coming, though. There is more involved here than this search for Mercer. This could prevent a disaster of global dimensions.
Reynolds nodded, his mind racing with scenarios already. This time the stakes were the highest. However, with Mercer and his team of mercenaries running loose, they were against time.
Hayes looked up from her tablet with determination. “I will get in touch with our sources at intelligence. If we can track their movement, then there’s a shot that we could actually stop them.
With a deep breath, Reynolds’s gaze moved between the map and his team’s faces. They were all in this together, but uncertainty and danger filled the road ahead. He had no other choice but to trust them-trust that they would find a way to stop Mercer and that they would do whatever it took to save the world from the threat he had unleashed.
As Fletcher and Hayes prepared for the mission, Reynolds couldn’t help but feel that they were running out of time. The virus had already been stolen. And now, with Mercer’s involvement, the threat had become even more complex and deadly. They needed to act quickly, or the consequences would be unimaginable.
